Chukka boots combine the casual feel of everyday boots with the style of formal shoes. They’re comfortable for daily wear but can also look quite formal. These ankle-high boots first appeared in the 1920s, combining elements of ankle and riding boots.

These lace-up boots originated with British Army units stationed in India, who wore ankle-high leather boots to play polo. They were designed for horseback riding, offering extra ankle support and comfort in stirrups. The name “chukka” comes from “chukker,” a term for a polo game period. In 1924, the Duke of Windsor brought the boots to the West after a visit to India. He wore them often, helping make chukkas a popular staple in men’s fashion.

It was originally a sports shoe, then became country wear before moving into urban fashion in the 1950s. Nowadays, chukka boots can be worn casually or even with formal outfits.

I have to point out that many people confuse chukkas with desert boots. Desert boots are a version of chukka boots with crepe rubber soles and typically unlined suede uppers.

Suede chukkas are perfect footwear for casual styles, but leather chukkas can also be suitable for formal looks.
