Winter parka is an essential part of any cold-weather wardrobe, especially if you live in a cold climate. Unfortunately, finding a well-made parka these days isn’t easy, which is why I’d like to share two of my favorite style options.

The parka was invented by the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic, who called it the "Amauti." Made from caribou skin and coated with fish oil, it kept them warm and dry in freezing conditions. The traditional amauti was more like what we know today as an anorak. It didn’t have an open front like the modern parkas developed since WWII.

If you choose a coat that is too fitted and formal, it won’t pair well with casual clothes and might look out of place. A perfect casual coat should have a roomy fit, have enough space to drape naturally and move comfortably, so you will look cosy and relaxed while wearing it.

A balmacaan is a loose, roomy, single-breasted overcoat with raglan sleeves, often made from thick wool or tweed.

Unlike a jacket, a vest only takes up part of your body, leaving your sleeves exposed, which makes it easier to experiment with color. I prefer vests in brighter colors because they add a vintage or old-school vibe to a casual outfit.

A shooting jacket is a sports jacket made specifically for activities like hunting and clay shooting. What makes them different from standard jackets is a special cut in the shoulder to allow better movement when aiming.

It’s a classic style that dates back 200 years, and it can be worn with a suit or with jeans and a sweater. Plus, if you get one with a detachable lining, it can be worn basically all year round.
