Guide to Summer Footwear
As I prefer to wear loafers whenever possible, my summer footwear isn’t much different from what I wear most of the year. Of course, at this time of year, my boots are at the back of my wardrobe, and I wear canvas sneakers more often. But not everyone is like me, so I wanted to write about summer footwear options. Is there a shoe that could be a do-it-all option in the summer? And what are the alternatives?
Loafers
Let’s start with loafers as they’re my favorite type of footwear, and probably a favorite for many of you as well. Unlined suede is the most comfortable option in the summer, not only literally, but also because an unlined pair has a thinner upper so your feet won’t get as hot as they would in lined pairs. I personally choose leather only when I’m wearing more formal outfits or colors that only work with black footwear as I’m not a fan of the aesthetic of black suede. Canvas Sneakers
They are the sportiest and most casual of all the summer footwear options. The right pair can even work with a suit, but they look best with a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. As I mentioned in the article What I pack for summer holidays, I know this will be very controversial, but I don’t like any form of sandals, flip-flops, or anything else that exposes your toes in public. I don’t like the aesthetics of those styles and I don’t like looking at other people’s toes. So I don’t want to put anyone in a situation where they have to look at mine. That’s why I wear canvas sneakers (deck shoes) to the beach or anywhere near the water.
Espadrille
Another very relaxed option for hot days is the espadrille — a simple slip-on upper on a rope sole. If you want a very breathable option, go with a canvas or linen upper, and if you want something more elegant, choose suede. With the right shape and sole they can totally work with a suit as well. When it comes to espadrilles, you have plenty of options, so it shouldn't be a problem to find a pair that perfectly matches your style.
Boat Shoes
They are a go-to summer shoe for many people — my guess is because they’re easy to slip on and look a bit more casual than loafers. Another reason might be that they’re available in many colors and fabrics, from canvas to leather.
As I mentioned in the Essential Spring Footwear article, the classic boat shoe is a style I’m personally not a big fan of. But some of the more minimal, lifestyle versions have really grown on me. I think they work well with tailoring and add an extra layer of relaxed elegance to an outfit. Check this article if you are looking for best quality boat shoes.
I understand that some of you might be disappointed because there are no sandals on this list. Even though I don’t like them and personally don’t wear them, there’s a chance I’ll put together a list of the best quality options very soon!
Do you have a favorite style when it comes to summer footwear, or would you say that each of these pairs serves a different function and that there’s a place for all of them?
